The Story:

So we have all heard the legendary stories, rumors and tales a thousand times before. Those lucky enough to experience it for themselves will tell you that Ibiza is an experience like no other. The wild parties, the dance floors that have to be seen to be believed, and quite simply the world’s best DJs playing the greatest selection of dance music the world has to offer. Ibiza is a place where hedonism is a virtue, inhibitions are lost, dignity is left behind and memories are made that will be with you forever.

The Ibiza highlight of 2009 was undoubtedly the IBIZA ZOO PROJECT. This ground breaking party took place in an abandoned zoo, with quite literally hundreds of party 'animals' grooving and moving around a seal pit amphitheater, to the sound of funky tribal beats assisted by the rhythmic thumping of bongo drums and other instruments. With the crowd dressed up in all forms of wild party attire (and a face painter on hand to assist) and the surrounds dimly lit by fire torches which burned throughout the night, what resulted was one of the purest party atmospheres ever created. All sounds pretty awesome hey!

The DJs selected to play at this party were hand picked with only the finest proponents of funky organic house music being invited to play. Commanding the decks at one of these unique occasions, and what is looked back on as one of Zoo Project's greatest performers / performances in 2009 was...

NIMA GORJI

Whilst we may not have an abandoned zoo, or a seal pit (yet), we do have the one man that can truly turn the Ibizan dream into a reality... NIMA GORJI. We will be doing our best to transform the Civic Underground in what we hope, will give you a taste (at least a little one) of the real Ibizan experience.

DJ Biography:

Nima was born to the son of a live musician which sparked his initial interest in music. The majority of his childhood was spent studying at music school. This basis along with his passion for electronic music which grew in later years has seen him rise to one of the music scene's most well respected DJ / Producers.

2005 saw Nima move full time to Ibiza, and he took no time to settle in; swiftly landing the coveted Friday morning residency at the world famous Space terrace. Since then it's been his regular DJ sets at Ibiza Underground which have really seen his talent get noticed across the island. His style is a combination of tribal and funky tech house, perfectly suited for the dance floor. His five years spent living and playing on the White Isle have seen his DJ sets gain plaudits from all angles.

Productions for influential labels such as Love letters From Oslo and Moon Harbour have been a mesmerising success, gaining support from the likes of Mathias Kaden to Loco Dice and beyond. With plenty more releases scheduled for 2010 Nima Gorji's stock continues to rise as a major DJ and producer.

It is with great pleasure and much excitement that we welcome Nima to the inaugural 'Tribalism' party, for an exclusive 4 hour set as he makes his highly anticipated Australian debut.

Feelin' (Joris Voorn Can't Kick This Feelin' When It Hits Mix) - Pitto

First got wind of this track before setting off on a recent road trip to the Gold Coast for Summerfieldayze, and heard it come to life at the after party with Mark Knight. This track topped off an awesome day, with Mark bringing the house down for over 4 hrs whilst drowning himself in vodka and champagne. This track has a cheeky vocal that only sneeks out a few times and is just a real pleasure for your ears.

Cruel Intentions - Simian Mobile Disco

Something new from Simian Mobile Disco, a solid bass line packaged around a funky flavour with the emotive vocals hitting home. Oh yes oh yes!

Whole Life - Oxia

This track for me sums up the recent direction house music has taken. A movement away from the more 'electronic' sounds of minimal/techno and toward a much more organic feel. Oxia, the once techno titan has crossed into the world of house. Developing a new sound that blends techno with more traditional instruments and samples and results in an inspiring organic tech house production. Immerse yourself in this track, this a defining moment in house music.

I had the privilege of seeing Motor City Drum Ensemble a month or so ago and he was phenomenal. Beside the fact he was given a less then sensational sound system, and with his record collection being allegedly locked in the hotel safe, he was able to pull off an epic performance using the warm up dj's collection. His productions are tight, and his mixes are a true experience through house music. His Raw Cuts series has gained him the most praise, with each track made in under two hours. There are six so far in the series, with #1 & #3 being my favourites.

Tracey In My Room - Everything But The Girl (Ben Watt)

Only those who have been living under a rock will be excused for not coming in contact with Ben Watt's talent. The musical genius behind this timeless masterpiece, along with countless others, is about make his way to our shores and will be playing on board the majestic Starship Sydney (that big glass boat) on Australia Day. I reckon this is pretty much the perfect way to spend Australia Day so if you don't have a ticket already I strongly recommend you get on that. You know its good for you!

Finally, I'm going to leave you with a few nice tracks that I like to call mood setters. These kind of tracks are more on the downtempo side and are very melodic. I've heard you play a number of sets now and this mix has got Caminer written all over it. How do you develop your particular sound?

I'm not one to play roller coaster sets with huge breakdowns, I try to pick a point in the distance and head straight for it. "Put the track on, get your groove on, you know what I'm sayin?". I like repetitive, percussive tracks that move in a straight line with loops that get in your head so you end up singing them to yourself on the dance floor long after that track has passed.

I've noticed a steady flow of vinyls coming from your bag, why is this so in our modern technological world?

Its the whole culture. I regularly go into the record store, pull them off the shelf and spend hours listening to the new stuff coming out. I see the song spinning before me, marvel at some of the artistic covers and even get laughed at by the owners for dancing in the store. To me, this is much more fulfilling than listening online and I come across producers that I would not have otherwise heard of. Apart from all that, they are a hell of a lot of fun to use.

You've been working on some of your own songs at home. If they were to one day be pressed to vinyl, which label would you most like to sign them?

Moon Harbour Recordings our of Germany for sure, with Oslo coming in at a very close second. As a general rule, those labels put out the sounds I love most with my favourite artists like Martinez, Mathias Kaden, Guido Schneider and Johnny D all releasing on them. For now though, its released via Hopped Scotch, so keep your ears open on these pages.

What's in store for the next few months?

I play regularly at Space Cadets at the Bunker on Thursday nights so I'll see anyone there who comes down. More recently I have become involved with the lovely gentlemen at the Civic Underground and have a hand in House Inspection which is on this Friday. Otherwise it's the regular trips to the record store to get my fix and some serious partying.

So I played a gig last week and some true champion decided to help himself to my bag. Lost items included Sennheiser headphones, new ipod, my whole cd collection, car keys, house keys, some clothing... and everything else important in my life. If anyone knows the whereabouts of some person that has a suspicious grin on their face and some new toys let me know. Any how, I thought I'd run you through a few tracks that will keep you occupied over the weekend.

Danny Howells - Right Off

First track up is from one of your more exiting and somewhat eccentric DJ's, Danny Howells. Just recently announced to play New Years in Sydney, Danny is not afraid of dressing up and entertaining a crowd, having a great sound that is usually on the progressive side. 'Right Off' is a little different and is somewhat less electronic and more authentic, feeling 'real' and funky, a track to get you in the mood. (Buy)

Joris Voorn - Chase the Mouse

Joris Voorn is someone to keep your eye on. Hailing from the music hub of the Netherlands, Joris has been consistently pumping out quality tracks time and time again. One of my all times favourites has to be his remix of Dark Flower by Robert Babicz, however he has recently released an EP titled Dusty House Room 2. On the EP is a great up-beat track titled Chase the Mouse. The breakdown and release from around 3 minutes onwards is real quality.(Buy)

Marek Hemmann - Gemini

Continuing along in our up-beat house direction, this track is an absolute gem (excuse the pun). One you may have heard played out a few times and is surely one to get you up off your seat and start throwing your body around like an idiot. Gemini builds and builds, and then builds some more with a funky little vocal towards the end. Featuring one of the most happy/groovy sax riff's I have heard in a long time. One that I can't help but listening to over and over again... Stunning. (Buy)

ATFC - I Called U (The Conversation) (ATFC's Conversation Killer)

Keeping with my love of sax at the moment is ATFC's remake of Lil' Louis and The Worlds classic I Called You (The Converation). From the highly regarded Defected Record label, ATFC is able to grab to the essence of this classic and give it the 2009 tech-house touch up. Surely one that will feature quite prominently in some of Mark Knight and the Toolroom lad's performances. Be sure to play this loud. (Buy)

Urban Absolutes - Sunbath On Venus - Dana Bergquist & Peder G Remix

Making yet another appearance on Hopped Scotch is a true revolutionary. Residing in Sweden, and a close friend of Eric Prydz, Dana Bergquist is one of the big boys at Discoteca. Within a very competitive industry, Dana has developed his own unique style of house music, now affectionately known as 'Dana House'. Borrowing brilliance from a vast array of genres, his live sets are true masterpieces and are a melodic journey through all the facets of house music. Renowned for his ability to play longer sets, Dana approaches each with careful and detailed track selection, consistently providing something new each time. Through this technique Dana is able to achieve a more authentic touch, reflected in the personal feel he gives to each set. He never plays the same set twice and often throws in plenty of abstract accapella's that fit in seamlessly.

Dana and to a lesser known extent Peder G are responsible for providing some of the most melodic and down right beautiful progressive tunes going round. Their productions are more on the progressive side, however the sound is rather unique and laid back. It took me a few of his sets to understand the genius of this man. So with this track I ask you to give it time. Sunbath on Venus is not your typical up-beat dancing track but a more subtle progressive piece. It is tracks like these that take much time and effort in making and thus should be treated accordingly. Be sure to play this at sunset, around friends, in front of a crowd, but most importantly on good day when you're loving life, its a classic. Keep an eye out for Dana in the future, he is the man! Hey Nic, thanks for the mix, could you take us through the arrangement and track selection of the Mix?

For this mix, I wanted to treat the listeners to some music they may not have heard previously. To do this I tried to chuck in some of my favourite tracks by some lesser-known artists that are great pump in a club.

In terms of arrangement, as with any mix that I do, whether it be in a club or otherwise, I try and direct the listeners emotions and feelings by variation in the music. Throughout a set I will attempt to bring the energy levels of a crowd up and down several times.

With this particular mix, my thought process was to start off a bit slower and deeper and then slowly build the energy up over the course of the mix. I started with some more melodic tracks early, such as “The Voice From Planet Love” and “Blackrock”, before moving towards some more rhythmic patterns and what I like to call “party” house tunes such as “Bailando” and “The Valve”.

Where does the inspiration for this mix come?

I guess the music that I play has evolved a lot even over the last year, and I have been inspired by many artists and djs that I have seen play in that time. You could say that this mix is partly inspired by the sounds of the European summer. I recently came back from a month in Europe, where I heard a lot of fresh music. “Hold Home” was a banger that I heard a lot, and I heard a song by Joris Voorn basically every time I went out.

A highlight for me was Luciano and Loco Dice playing a 5 hour closing set in the Amnesia terrace for the Cocoon party. It was a great experience, with the place still packed and pumping at closing time. So the inspiration definitely comes from that sort of party vibe that they were able to create.

Which artists have you been listening to lately?

I listen to quite a variety of music at home, and I especially love listening to albums,

I really appreciate them as a whole piece of work. Some of my favourite albums of this year are:

“Heritage” by 2000 and One -- one of the funkiest albums I’ve heard in a long time with quite and old school house feel.

“Moderat” by Moderat --- Superb piece of work that creates a genre of its own by the genius minds of Modeselektor and Apparat.

“In Cars We Rust” by Exercise One --- My favourite album to sit down and listen to from front to back, a real journey.

“Merriweather Post Pavilion” by Animal Collective --- An experimental blend of electronic and natural elements that work to form a forward thinking masterpiece.

“Kaiku” by Kiki --- A beautifully smooth techno journey full of highs and lows.

“The Inner Jukebox” by Dj T. – A fresh and modern take on house music that is sure to have you grooving.

With regards to the artists that are getting high rotation by me in clubs, Lauhaus and Julien Chaptal are two of my favourites at the moment, they are machines; consistently producing (together and separately) banger after banger full of genuine groove. Other artists who I’m always on the lookout for include Reboot, Alex Celler, Nima Gorji, Kevin Yost, Nick Curly, Martinez, and Marco Carola.

You’re closely involved with and play regularly Space Cadets, Thursday nights, fortnightly @ the Bunker (underneath the Bourbon) and also at House inspection, Friday nights, monthly @ the Civic Underground. How are these nights progressing?

Space Cadets has really been taking off lately. Initially it was very hard to attract a crowd on a Thursday night, but about 6 months down, I think that the word has gotten and the night is pulling a crowd very consistently.

House Inspection on the other hand, is still a newborn and the first one (3 weeks ago) was surprisingly a great success. The civic was heaving with a party vibe that I believe is quite hard to find in Sydney these days. I’ve got a good feeling about the next one on Friday September 25 with Garry Todd who has upcoming releases on 2020 vision and Raum, and in my opinion is one of Sydney’s best house djs at the moment.

Finally, what have you got planned over the next few months leading into summer?

I’m hoping to polish off some productions that I’ve been working on and spending a bit of time in the studio, so I’ll keep you posted on my progress! And of course I’ll be partying like its 1999. Bring on the sun!

Hopped Scotch presents Summer Launch at Clovelly

What a perfect start to summer. An absolute peach of a day, complimented by a stunning beach side venue, (special thanks to Johann) provided a platform for what till be fondly remembered as one of the greatest house parties to ever go down. The memories definitely got a little hazy towards the end, but I do recall seeing blow up pools, water balloons, too many dickies, a groovie reggae band and a rather raging dance floor... with a few certain people even raised on shoulders. Inevitably the police rocked up but were blown away, even wanting to come up, with one saying "man I wish I wasn't on duty tonight".

From our standpoint it was an absolute privilege to be in that atmosphere and provide the tunes, something that we certainly enjoyed and we hope you did too. The atmosphere was second to none and that "Summer Party Feeling" is definitely something that will feature in our events to come in the future. For those that missed out and for those that can't wait to do it all again, very shortly we will be announcing some news of the first event that Hopped Scotch will be bringing to you. In association with another organisation we will be bringing you an event that is sure to get you grooving and moving into the summer. We are currently in the process of finalising the artists and once everything is locked in you will be the first to hear about it. Get exited!

Okay guys, today we are profiling the first of many local dj’s who share the same passion for house music as we do. Robbie Myers a.k.a Mr. Hopped Scotch is today’s local jockey. In the interview following, Robbie gives us a sneak preview of what to expect in the coming months from Hopped Scotch.

Robbie take us through your concept of Hopped Scotch…whats it all about?

To sum it up, it’s basically a culture that I want to create. A culture where people can join together and listen to good music in a friendly environment and have a great time, without the condescending bullshit that comes attached to many aspects of Sydney’s dance scene.

I maintain that I don’t want to come across as a music snob and each to their own, but it all basically started out of a desire to redirect people’s attention toward some quality music (in my opinion) that vastly goes unrecognized. I formed this out of a frustration of Sydney’s lack of an internationally renowned and respected dance culture. So I decided it was time that I stopped complaining and started doing something about it, so I started a blog with the intention of bringing great music, a great night out and great times all under one roof.

The blog was firstly intended to highlight some of the greatest House music going around and has turned into a chance for House music lovers to unite and share their passion. The next step is to give the followers of Hopped Scotch an opportunity hear the great music they are exposed to first hand. The first Hopped Scotch is well and truly on its way. The feedback received has been great and it just shows a reflection of how many people out there truly share the same passion.

Why is Hopped Scotch ideal for the house lover? What does it offer people that sets it apart from the rest?

Hopped Scotch isn't just a blog, its a way of life. Hopped Scotch gives you an uncomplicated view on dance music and life and invites you to come on board and share our vision. We want to create a culture of fun, where dance music lovers can let loose and have a good time in an environment without all the judgmental condescending stuff you get in most clubs.

With artists profiles, regular dj mixes, event news and reviews as well as bringing you unforgettable parties, Hopped Scotch provides a unique insight into the House music world and is the perfect opportunity for artists and dj’s to be recognised and followers to know what’s going on.

What does Hopped Scotch have planned for the coming months ahead?

The upcoming months will see Hopped Scotch transform from blog into brand. With a few events lined up over the coming months and some big ones over the summer the times are moving fast. Expect to see more mixes, artist profiles and some quality tracks, hopefully some produced under the Hopped Scotch label.

In regards to the mix you blend through an array of genres, moving most noticeably through deep and tech house and there is also a hint of techno, have these genres always been a favourite of yours?

To be honest I try to look at music from an artist’s perspective; you don’t make a track with the intention of it fitting into a genre so why should it be limited once its made. If you had to classify what I like, I guess you could say that when I started DJing I was a big fan of progressive and then moved towards a more techier side to techno/tech house and then returning to some the of the foundations of deep house. I like them all and try to reflect that as much as possible in my sets. I guess from a DJ’s perspective I just want to make people dance.

Who are you digging at the moment? I noticed a nice mix of old (your love) and newer tracks (Gemini) on the mix, is this something you do on all your mixes?

I’ve recently returned from Ibiza which obviously opened my eyes up to a few more flavours and styles. Seeing so much good music and trying to capture it all in a set is difficult. Recently I've been digging Gorge and Nick Curly as well as to a few funky house sets from the Dana Bergquist, Luke Fair, Mark Knight and some old sets of Desyn Massiello hich have notably made an impact on my mix.

Track selection, is in my opinion, the key to a good mix and I feel that it’s more important to play what’s good and not just what’s the latest. A combination of old and new gives something for everyone and is really fun to play. Its not a competition of who can fill their set with the most exclusive tracks, that’s not what djing should be about. So expect to see more genre pushing tracks gathered from all the ages of House music.

I hear you have just bought your first essentials for your home studio, are you producing much in the studio at the moment? Do you prefer djing or production?

Yeah bought an Axiom 49 the other day which has been quite fun. Only just stepped foot into the production world but its definitely something I’ve been planning on doing for quite a while. I’ve started producing a couple tracks, but as many producers probably know, I think I’ve become my own worst enemy when deciding whether its good or not. Music is a passion and something to be shared, so I guess I’ll just keep at it hey.

In music news...

Sony inthemix 50 polls come out Wednesday (Here)
This year's polls not only include best DJ and producer but include best club, best event and best international act. Last year Tydi from Queensland took out the top spot in a win for prog/trance lovers, knocking Ajax and the electro empire from the top stop and perhaps representing a shift in Australian music tastes. Eagerly anticipating the results.

Definitely recommend buying tickets to this one. There's some of the obvious big names coming out; Deadmau5 and Axwell as well as the now regular Crookers and Bloody Beetroots, but if I were you I'd definitely be checking out John Dahlback, Umek and Chicane. Dahlback has really been putting his hand up recently with some quality progressive/tech-house releases. Umek, known for his technical skills will be sure to rip up a techno-storm. Chicane, who has long had a spot in many of your playlists over the years, has been recently been making a few remixes worth talking about.

House Inspection at the Civic on Friday
A new House night starting this Friday at the Civic Underground. Started by some friends of Hopped Scotch, the night is dedicated to House music, particularly some deep house and disco and is definitely something Hopped Scotch approves of. If you haven't been to the Civic before the sound system is epic and with entry free before 11 and and only $5 after if you're up for some quality house music be sure to check it out.

And finally our lovable friends... The Attic Radio have made it through to the semi's and will be playing again at Manning this Wednesday. Apparently having dropped the rather dainty guitar, the guys have added some edge to their set and are heading in a much harder/dancier direction. Really looking forward to this one. Hope to see you there.

Right.

Welcome back to the real world from whichever destination you made it to in your break. Europe, particularly Ibiza went off. Splendour was a success and I heard Thailand and Bali were both awesome. From all accounts it appears that music was definitely on everyone's mind.

Apologies for the recent lack of posting, I've been away for a bit, but am back, ready and dedicated to Hopped Scotch. The time away gave me a chance to decide where Hopped Scotch should be heading. I've decided to step it up and add some additional contributors, they'll be making appearances shortly over the next few weeks. Secondly, with the help of these additions, we will aim to bring you a Hopped Scotch night later down the track, with the plan to make it a regular occurrence.

We are going to bring you a night worth talking about, a night to look forward to, a night that is clearly lacking in Sydney. Hopped Scotch Nights will see the beginning of a new culture emerge in Sydney's club life. A night with a fun party atmosphere where you can dance all night long to some funkiest, deepest and grooviest house music going round. By infusing multiple genres and mediums of music, provided by the some of the best local talent and surprise international guests; the night will provide something for everyone and give you an opportunity to truly enjoy yourself, leaving you asking for more.

This is for real and anyone's welcome to come on board and help out. This is a night for you, a chance to stop watching average 'socialite nights' go by and finally be part of something truly special. A night that you actually look forward to that comes without the bullshit.

In other news the Attic Radio are playing this Wednesday in the Sydney Uni Band Comp at Manning Bar. They have made it to the second round and not only does the support help but I think I speak for all of us who were blown away by their first performance. The night starts at 6pm and goes through till 11pm, so get down their for a few drinks and enjoy the night.

Welcome to Hopped Scotch, glad you could make it.

I've been meaning to enter the blogging world for a while but I just didn't know how I wanted to enter it. So whilst studying for exams and spending much time procrastinating I thought I'd just go ahead and just do it. Now I know there are countless blogs out there and countless people to read them, so why read this one...

Well, I think that there is a need for people to shift there focus back towards quality music that vastly goes under the radar. From my perspective, it seems that dance music has been able to capture a whole new crowd that formerly only listened to pop/rock music. I'm talking about the indie crowd. Thanks to the progression of indie/pop/dance or whatever you want to call it, the barrier to the dance music world has been broken and people are beginning to see that it isn't the 'doof doof' anti-social scene that it's portrayed to be. At the same time that this boundary has come down, the electro-house scene has really hit its mark and captured the attention of people from varying backgrounds of music. What many of these people forget is that electro-house is not just the only house music out, nor is it the ultimate.

Now before we go getting high and mighty about what good music is, and throwing our comments at electro-house music, let me tell you this. I have not set up Hopped Scotch as an electro hating blog, as that would just be in sour-taste and a fine example of music snobbery. Rather, this blog is dedicated to all forms of house music (including electro),with the aim of highlighting tracks that are just awesome in doing what they try to achieve and more. Music whether we like it or not is one of the most subjective mediums of expression and an artist should not be judged for making a song that is too popular, or too catchy surely?

Music is just simply an outlet of expression for an artist and if the artist makes a track that does well, then it just reflects society's wants. If a track is simple and quickly becomes quite popular, it may soon pass, like most phases and fads... But, every so often a truly mind-blowing track comes around that just does it for you. It is those tracks that will come back again and again and then again in remixes, but it's not easy to make one of those. They are gold. So what I'm trying to say is that because music is so subjective, you can pass judgment all you want, but at the end of the day, you should just listen to stuff that you like, because really, aren't they your ears that are listening to it...

So with this being said we can now begin our journey into house music. Now Hopped Scotch can't guarantee that you will love every track we post, we're just aiming to point your ears in the right direction and encourage all of you to go out there, listen to music, see music and even try making some yourself.

So for the first posting, I thought I'd start with a French House producer going by the name of Sébastien Léger. According to Sebastian, his style is Groovy Smooth Tech House Tropical Minimal Funky Techno, so pretty much a bit for everyone. There are two reasons for choosing Sébastien, firstly my hat is taken off to some of his most recent works, finding a real niche sound that is upbeat and very funky.

Secondly, he has recently remixed a song that even those that have been living under Everest would know, none other than Daft Punk's One More Time, with a little Aerodynamic thrown in as well. Quite a nice piece of work.
